 Calcium is a major component of calcareous algae, the skeletal material of hard corals, and the calcareous needles of soft and leather corals.
 In many cases, too low a calcium concentration leads to delayed coral and calcareous algae growth.
 Calcium also fulfills a number of important biological functions. In a healthy tank, the growth and reproduction of corals, calcareous algae and other organisms can lead to calcium depletion.
 To keep the system stable, it is important that the calcium level does not deviate by more than 15 mg/l from the optimal measuring range of 420-450 mg/l. Therefore, testing should be carried out regularly. This means that any calcium test used should be accurate to well below 15 mg/l, otherwise monitoring such fluctuations will be difficult.
 The Salifert Calcium test set measures the calcium content in steps of 5 mg/l and achieves an accuracy of 10 mg/l.
 The color change is clearly visible and indicates small but significant fluctuations in the calcium content.
 The test is not affected by magnesium.
